David Hathaway is a British Evangelist who has ministered worldwide for more than 60 years, especially under communism. Today his ministry is focused on providing assistance both spiritually and materially to the former Soviet countries and Russian Holocaust survivors living in Israel.
David says: “My experiences with God have never been in a church, or in a conference. It was first in my teenage cry for God – then through my two healings from cancer – in my miraculous release from a Czechoslovak prison for Bible smuggling – and through many other problems and subsequent miracles. When I look back, I can see the Hand of God directing my life, although at times I didn’t understand what was happening! What will it be next, what will happen this year? All I know is that it is step by step, and I have not reached the end of the road yet; everything I have been through has prepared me for what God is about to do.
“I have a vision burning in my soul – Eurovision – a vision of Europe won for Christ. This is God’s vision, God’s desire – to see His power, His glory in Europe! For the last 62 years I have followed this vision – it burns in my heart, Jeremiah described it as a fire shut up in his bones – I cannot keep silent or sit still! I am determined to see the Gospel preached! Europe is the least evangelised continent in the world. Yes, there is still much religion, but God wants to set Europe on fire by His Holy Spirit!”
After 11 years as a full-time pastor and evangelist in Britain, David’s ministry to Russia and Europe began in 1961 when he organised the first ever expedition to Jerusalem by road, through the Iron Curtain countries. Out of this experience, David began smuggling Bibles into Russia and Eastern Europe until, in 1972, he was arrested, tortured and imprisoned in Czechoslovakia. After serving just one year of his sentence, David was brought home by Prime Minister Harold Wilson.
After his release from prison, David’s heart continued to burn for Eastern Europe, the last words of one of his fellow prisoners continually ringing in his ears: ‘David, don’t forget us. No one knows, no one in the West cares.’ David continued to go into the underground churches to preach until eventually, in the 1980s, he began to openly hold services and conferences in the communist countries. Following the collapse of the Iron Curtain David ministered throughout Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania, followed by Ukraine, Siberia and all over Russia.
For more than 60 years since his baptism in the Holy Spirit, God’s fire has been burning in David’s soul, a passion to see the power of God demonstrated on earth – and he wants to pass this fire, this passion onto you!
